The best place to eat in London is…

We admit it. We love food and we love eating it. This makes us (in our own opinion) exceptionally qualified to tell you that the best restaurant in London is…

Sticks ‘n’ Sushi

Sticks ‘n’ Sushi (or ‘Sticks’ as we tend to lovingly refer to it as) is a Denmark-based restaurant known primarily for its unique combination of traditional Japanese sushi and sashimi dishes and yakitori sticks from the grill.

It is also our absolute favourite place to eat in London (and, arguably, Denmark) based on the following simple criteria.

1. Atmosphere and service

The moment we first stepped into the Covent Garden restaurant, we immediately knew, Good things are about to happen here. The interior was beautiful and chic with its dark leather tabletops, exposed brick walls and gorgeous lighting. Everywhere around us, staff bustled in their trademark black shirts with various Japanese and Danish ‘lessons’ on the back.

The place was full so they seated us at the bar, where we had front row seats to see the yakitori magic happen. As we worked our way through the menu over the next three hours, we watched as the team of chefs whipped up plate after plate of skewers, each one dripping with sauce and beautifully finished. All the while, the waitstaff kept us constantly topped up with cocktails and drinks — never once rushing us to finish.

It was absolutely amazing and we knew we were ruined for sushi anywhere else.

2. Location, location, location

Fortunately for us, while Sticks may not be everywhere in London yet, it’s definitely convenient to get to. You can get your fix at any of the following locations in London:

i) Covent Garden – WC2E 8PY: As above, this is possibly the most busy version of Sticks, perfect for some great food to end a trendy night out.

ii) Wimbledon – SW19 7PA: This is the place that literally saved our lives after a long day of queuing at Wimbledon to watch the championship matches this summer. Again, service here is unparalleled and it is just a short walk from the train station.

iii) Greenwich – SE10 9JB: When this place opened in January 2015, we thought it was an answer to our prayers. Sticks only a 12 minute bus ride away from home?? However, this is our least favourite location…while the food is still amazing (more on that in a bit) the service each of the 3 times we have visited was less than what we have come to expect from Sticks (i.e. spectacular).

iv) Canary Wharf – E14 5AR: Our absolute favourite location. Walking distance from home and just two minutes from the Canary Wharf station, this has solved all our sushi needs since May 2015. As an added bonus now, if you are also in the Canary Wharf area, Jinn delivers from Sticks straight to your door, which makes this, quite frankly, a perfect world we live in.

Special mention: Copenhagen – Because we are obsessed with Sticks, we also paid a visit to Sticks ‘n’ Sushi in the Tivoli Hotel, Copenhagen. Definitely recommend this one as well if you are in the area!

3. Yumminess

Last, but certainly not least, the main reason you should go to Sticks ‘n’ Sushi is the food. There is not a single, solitary menu item that we have chosen that was not absolutely delicious. Our recommendation is that you should go big or go home: order one of their platters from the set menu so you can sample a wide variety of dishes. If you are in a bigger group, definitely do the Four Meal Drive Big:

For smaller groups, we also swear by the Mini Maki De Luxe:

For the ‘sticks’ part of your meal, be sure to get the Man Food, which gives you a little bit of everything. Or you can just get our 3 favourite skewers, goat cheese in dried ham, lamb chops and the chicken with orange sauce:

If you are able to eat with the best of us, make sure you also get an order of ebi bites. These tiny pieces of tempura shrimp with peppers are to die for.

For dessert, there’s really only one way to go. The mini creme brulee is a personal favourite (bottom row below). But the chocolate and coconut cakes (top row below) are also delicious.

The best thing about the food at Sticks is that it is consistent across all its locations. No matter where you go, you know you will be served the same amazing dishes.

So congratulations to Sticks ‘n’ Sushi, our official favourite restaurant of 2015! Wear your crown proudly and we will definitely be back in the New Year! We’ll be the ones ordering the entire menu and eating ourselves into a food coma as we mumble, “It’s all just sooooo good!”
